The London School of Psychiatry

Introduction

The London School of Psychiatry is delighted to welcome you to one of the most vibrant and diverse training environments in the world. We offer unparalleled opportunities for learning, research, and clinical practice across a wide range of settings. Our training programmes are delivered in partnership with some of the world’s leading healthcare organisations and top-ranked universities.

I have had the privilege of serving as Head of School since February 2024. My own journey began when I came to London to train in psychiatry — a decision that shaped my career profoundly. After completing most of my training here, I never looked back. Today, as a consultant psychiatrist I can say that training and working in London has offered me exceptional opportunities for growth and development.

I hope you will find our programmes as inspiring and rewarding as I did, and that they ignite your passion for psychiatry. As a resident doctor here, you will have every opportunity to:

  • Foster your interest in research
  • Explore the latest developments in teaching and learning
  • Gain experience in psychotherapy
  • Develop the clinical skills required of a future psychiatrist
  • Meet some of the most inspiring clinicians and academics
  • Most importantly, discover your own path and make your contribution to the world

If you are joining us, seize the moment and as someone once said, “Don’t waste your fear on anything but danger.” I hope you will make the most of this exciting chapter.

Our Commitment to You

We are living in challenging times. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, uncertainty and optimism coexisted for all of us working in the NHS. The School worked hard to support residents throughout the pandemic — from redeployment during the crisis to recovery planning and creating positive educational experiences in the years that followed.

We have also developed projects to:

  • Improve understanding of recruitment and retention
  • Promote learning alongside residents from other specialties
  • Expand educational opportunities in areas such as inclusion health
  • Support residents returning to clinical training after breaks
  • Help residents succeed in exams and prepare for consultant roles
  • Understand and reduce the impact of violence on trainees
  • Support resident's wellbeing

The NHS landscape is constantly evolving, and mental health provision is undergoing major transformation. I will continue working with NHS England  and the Department of Health to ensure that training develops alongside these changes.

Your Voice Matters

Residents' involvement is a cornerstone of our ethos. We work closely with the RCPsych London Resident Doctors Committee, The London Division of the Royal College, host a pan-London trainee wellbeing committee, and have established an Educational Fellows network. You will have access to regional training days in addition to local taught courses.

You can find out more about individual programme specialties and locations by following the links to their webpages.

Psychiatry is a challenging, fascinating, and deeply rewarding career. Training in London offers a breadth of opportunity and experience you will not find anywhere else. Welcome to the journey!
